Windows and most programs have a problem when it comes to deleting files.  To save time when they delete a file, they actually only delete its listing in the index of the harddrive.  This leaves the actual contents of the file on the harddrive.  Subsequent harddrive activity may or may not overwrite this data.  Anyone knowing how to read the binary content of the drive can undelete files that you thought were deleted.
